Meeting and Greeting

Thursday, 13 August 2009

We took it easy this morning, although I woke up earlier than I normally do at home. For breakfast, Shelley fed me my first crumpet (with golden syrup) and I taught her how to make iced tea. Ice is not a creature comfort here, either, even given the warm climate, so maybe my ice-crunching teeth will get a break for a few weeks…. We downloaded our photos from the coast and from our fun dinner, and then thought about all that we could get done on our “free” day. Justine (of the Photo of the Day fame) arrived at Shelley’s house in the late morning and we called a cab to deliver us to our apartment hotel where we would be staying for Showcase.

When we got to the Meritton, our rooms were not ready, so we checked our bags and went next door to Zozo, a little Korean restaurant, for a bite of lunch. Shelley had this rice cake soup that came in a bowl big enough to mix a batch of cookies in, and Justine and I had meals that came in something sort of like a bento box. I had beef bulgogi, which was delicious. After lunch, we checked into our apartments. This is a very typical arrangement in Australia – we had a lovely three bedroom unit with two bathrooms, a large lounge room (in this case, a living room and dining room combo), a full kitchen, and a laundry room! Each of the rooms had king beds that had been separated into twins, so we had plenty of space. Did I mention that we were on the 70th floor and in a corner apartment? We had INCREDIBLE views of Darling Harbour and most of Sydney!! About the only things we couldn’t see were the Sidney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, because they were blocked by tall buildings.

Throughout the afternoon, our apartment mates arrived. In our unit were Claire, Shelley’s upline and longtime friend; Fiona, who is from Sydney and is also Claire’s downline; Pattie, who is Fiona’s downline and is from Dubbo, in the center west of NSW; and Linda, who is from Goulbourn, which is southwest of Sydney. Across the hall were Pam, who is American but has been in Australia for about a dozen years; Shelley’s good friend Ann, who is from Sydney and is in Pam’s downline; Leanne, from Sydney and Ann’s downline; Robyn, who is Pam’s downline and neighbor; Justine, who is from Bega; and Meagan, Justine’s downline from sort of near Justine. So now you have an idea who we partied with all weekend!

Although we had aspirations of getting to registration around 2:30 or 3:00, by the time we got going it was after 4 and registration closed at 4:30! We bought our three-day monorail passes and popped over to Darling Harbour, all dressed in black on black for our Meet and Greet costumes. Once we found our way to registration, we found out that I was supposed to have been there for rehearsal at 3:30… I’m not sure I ever got that memo – and that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! At any rate, I went in for my rehearsal (completely unprepared to rehearse) and they let me speak anyway! It was a good thing I had sent my talk in ahead of time – it was all ready for me on the teleprompter and the technical crew was stellar! They made everything so easy for me, and after seeing what the procedure was, I was confident that all would go well on Friday.

We had a little time before we were to meet Susan Wilmot (Shelley’s up-upline and consultant #1 in Australia) and the rest of her team for Meet and Greet, so Shelley and I went to the Aquarium, which was right on Darling Harbour. We took tons of photos (a shocker, I know!) and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the native Australian fishes. I even learned about a brand new sea creature – the dugong, which I’d never heard of but looked suspiciously like a manatee! From the aquarium, we took off for the Lindt Café (yes, that would be Lindt chocolate, as in those yummy Lindt truffles!) to meet the rest of the black on black team!

Kylie and Mandy were already at the café – they were supposed to be rooming near us but instead ended up around the block. I really enjoyed talking to the both of them and wished we could have stayed closer!! Soon Susan and another Exec Dir, Amanda Bergin, arrived with a giant picture frame. Since the theme for Showcase AU was “You Complete the Picture” it was a perfect ‘costume’ for us. You should have seen us all trying to get in the picture (we decided we could be like one of those moving Harry Potter pictures) and walking down to the Meet and Greet venue with the giant frame!

The Meet and Greet was the official start of Showcase, and it is for everyone who is attending. Generally, teams dress up in a costume that befits the overall Showcase theme (although Shelley tells me that there is a Village People group every year, regardless of the theme!) and everyone enjoys drinks and lovely entrees and just has a relaxing time catching up with CM friends. We came in and huddled together for our ‘official’ team shot (thanks for including me, Susan!!) and then we made the rounds, meeting and greeting! Some of the facebook friends I met were the other divas, Kerrianne Hobbs and Janice Gilhooley, and Anne Cook from WA. I met Brian O’Callaghan, who is President of CM Australasia (and looking fine in his faux mustache and artist’s garb) and I found Mark Mizen and Eve Millar from CM US and compared notes with them. Jenny was not feeling well, so she stayed in, but Jan and her crew were in attendance. I met LOTS of other new Australian CM friends and just had a grand time.

You’ll get a feel for the creativity of the costumes when you see the photos posted on facebook. Sorry, but I doubt they’re going to make it onto the blog, as internet connections have not been consistent enough for me to load them here, and as you can tell, I’ve barely had time to write, much less add photos! Check my profile for the album “Jan Down Under” – if you’re not on facebook, let me know and I’ll send you the phanfare link and you can see the photos there!

So, another big day came to a close and we caught the monorail back to our apartment where we found we still had the energy to talk some more. Some things are universal, I suppose! Pam kept us in stitches with stories about her early days in Australia, since she had another American to vouch for the foreign-ness of some of the language and expressions. One of the funniest stories was about when her daughter joined a Brownie troop and Pam was asked to bring “a slice” to one of the meetings. She was happy to do that, but she wasn’t sure what kind of slice to bring, so she asked. She was told to bring whatever she wanted, so she’s thinking, “slice of bread, slice of tomato, slice of cake, slice of bologna, slice of pie….”???? Finally, when pressed, someone told her to bring vanilla!! WHAT?!?!? So for all you Americans out there, next time you are in Australia and asked to bring a slice, just bake a pan of brownies or something and you’ll be in good shape!! Another good one was when she was asked to come for a bit of a barbie and to bring a plate. Imagine her surprise when she and her family arrive, each with their own empty plates (and silverware, in case it was needed, too) only to find out she was to have brought a dish to share!

After laughing until I was crying, I crawled into bed to rest up for another fun-filled day!

Appropriately met and greeted, not to mention rehearsed and regaled,

Jan

Aqua Dining!

Wednesday evening 12 August 2009

Since I practically fell asleep on the drive home from Watson’s Bay (how did Shelley know? Maybe because I stopped talking!) we decided to take a little rest before dinner. I set my phone for about 20 minutes, fell sound asleep, woke up when the phone rang, turned it off, and rolled right back over! Then I woke up about five minutes after we were supposed to leave… Thankfully, Shelley had also gone straight to sleep (even though she was ready on time…) and we left only about 15 minutes after we planned.

I was really excited about our dinner plans – we were dining at an especially nice restaurant called Aqua, which overlooks the North Sydney Olympic Pool and has a stunning view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, AND we were meeting some of the Digital Divas – Jenny MacKay and Jan Vanderkop!! Also joining us were Jenny’s downline, Kerry Driscoll, and Shelley’s friend (and CMC) Ann Blythe. The restaurant was also adjacent to Luna Park, which is a waterfront (I’m talking PRIME real estate!) amusement park with some incredible lights! We met the other girls in the shadow of the grinning Luna Park sign and then walked upstairs to Aqua.

The joint was jumping! There were several large parties and the views were just amazing! Jan, Jenny, and I got the best seats (thanks, y’all!) and we had a blast there. The food was incredible!! In Australia, when it says ‘entrée’ on the menu, that would be appetizers, and then main courses are called ‘mains’. Dessert is dessert and that’s what I chose first! But back to our entrees… Shelley had a delicious warm salad of King Oyster Mushrooms and Girolles with asparagus, soft egg, parmesan, and truffle dressing; several people had pan-fried Yamba prawns with creamed leek, Persian feta, and salsa verde, and I had pan-fried, pancetta-wrapped Canadian scallops with pea puree and aged goat cheese sauce (YUM!) Of course, we had to have some champers (champagne), courtesy of Ann, and Jenny had brought a bottle of wine to share. For our mains, several of us had smoked King Island beef tenderloin on creamed spinach with celeriac puree and a porcini cream sauce, Shelley had grilled barramundi on braised baby lentils with winter vegetables and a shiraz jus, and Jan (I think!) had a prosciutto wrapped veal shank on Paris mash, winter broadbeans, and braising jus. Dessert was really tasty, too! Jenny and Jan had sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce, crème fraiche, and caramelised banana; Kerry and I had soft-centred dark chocolate and hazelnut pudding with rum and raisin ice cream, and Shelley and Ann had lime Baked Alaska with warm roast strawberries and orange zest. Is your mouth watering yet??? And then we even got Scott, the very tall, very good-looking server to come pose for a photo with me (you know, the crazy American). I told him I had a lovely tall daughter in Texas – he said that might be a bit far, but he was intrigued by her height! Sorry, Kim, I didn’t get his digits!

Once again, the ride home was very quiet as I was almost asleep – it had been a long, wonderful day, and I still can’t quite believe I’m really Down Under! I don’t remember getting into bed, but I remember it felt good to get a night’s sleep in a real bed!

Sated and satisfied,

Jan

Hello, Sydney!!

Wednesday, 12 August 2009

Once united with Shelley, we made our way to the car and were off to her home in Kensington, which is not far from the airport.  I was able to hop in the shower and get out of the clothes I'd had on for what seemed like days but was probably less than 24 hours.  Apparently the flight from LAX to Sydney was 14.5 hours, but since we crossed the International Date Line, I sort of missed Tuesday!  Anyway, I was rested and ready to go, so Shelley had a bite of breakfast and then I taught her how to make iced tea.  After that fortification, we were off to explore the Sydney beaches.

We drove through Coogee and parked the car, and I got my first view of the Pacific hitting the Australian shoreline.  We began walking down a paved pathway that connects the beaches on this side of town.  The weather was GLORIOUS and the colors of the ocean were even prettier!

We climbed over a fence to wander through this seaside cemetery - Shelley told me that Sydney had been developed very haphazardly, and that the land this cemetery was probably just some farmland that had been set aside.  I thought it was too bad that the inhabitants here couldn't enjoy the view!  But a little Kestril really did have a bird's eye view!

We continued on down the coast and each turn of the shoreline brought more and more beautiful colors and huge crashing waves!  We passed Clovelly Bronte, Tamarama, and Gaerloch Beaches, and we even got to see a number of surfers.

The walking trail we were following had more and more spectacular scenery around each turn.  I was fascinated by the cliffside "home" of a man who once was homeless and now has perhaps the best view in Sydney.

Soon we were at world-famous Bondi Beach!!  We ate a delicious lunch at Bondi Icebergs (where there is an ocean pool for people who like to swim in salt water even when it's freezing cold outside, but they also have a lovely club and restaurant) and just enjoyed being in the sun and outdoors.  I have determined that winter in Sydney is much more like winter in Florida than it is winter in Carolina! Perhaps the palm trees should have been my first clue...

Bondi is a lovely beach, with a huge pavilion and the famous Bondi Beach Lifesaving Station.  Even in the middle of winter (think February) there were people on the beach and lots of surfers in the water.

From Bondi Beach, we wandered the streets of the neighborhood and I exchanged some money, then we hailed a cab to take us back to our car.  We rode over to Watson's Bay, where we were treated to awesome views of downtown Sydney, the Opera House, and the Sydney Harbor Bridge.  We drove down the most expensive street in Sydney (think FANTASTIC views!) and found a little reserve where we took some photos.  Too bad we had to go down about 80 stairs to get down there...

We stopped in at a little pub near the ferry dock and had a lemonade and a hot chocolate and watched the sailboats and seagulls, then we drove a little farther up the hill towards the naval base, where we saw lorikeets and other beautiful birds in the flame trees.   After that, we hiked up to see a good view of The Gap, which is infamous for the number of suicides that have taken place here.

By this time, it was getting to be late afternoon and the sun was on its way down, so we went back to Shelley's for a quick rest and a chance to change for dinner.  What a wonderful way to start my Down Under Adventure!

Stay tuned - dinner is a whole 'nother story, but here is a sampling of photos from the whole day and night!

Feeling 'beachy keen'!

Across the Pacific

So, just when I was thinking I had everything under control - bags packed and within weight limits, plenty of time to get to the airport and go through security and then grab a bite to eat, still leaving time to blog before boarding - someone else had a different idea!  I didn't leave anything behind in the hotel room and I got to the airport in time.  I found the Qantas ticket counter and was leisurely getting my boarding pass when the very helpful (really!) Qantas employee told me that my flight was getting in for hours, and that I could get on the earlier flight, which was boarding NOW.  She checked and made sure there was a business class seat available and then weighed my carryon bags.  Somehow, one gained five kilos (not possible, I'm quite sure) so I had to rearrange.  But, NO TIME to rearrange, so I grabbed my computer and tennis shoes out of that bag and allowed it and my big suitcase to be checked.  Then I put on my shoes, grabbed my flip-flops and the carry on that weighed less than 7 kilos, and RAN to security, where I was escorted to the front of the line and made it through.  By the time I got on board I was in a tizzy!!!

But I was not too discombobulated to realize how LOVELY it was going to be to have a seat in business class!!  I was in the middle row (three seats) but on the aisle, and no one came to sit in that middle seat, so we had plenty of extra room.  The seats also TOTALLY reclined - flat out, like a BED! - so I knew I was going to be in for a treat.  My only worry was dinner - I had enjoyed a lovely beachfront lunch of shrimp ceviche and fish tacos, but that was hours before.  Nothing to fret about, though - dinner would be served shortly after takeoff; if I would be so kind as to peruse the menu and make my selection.  Let's see, halibut with sugar snap peas and fingerling potatoes or beef tenderloin....  I opted for the halibut, with a couple of glasses of a lovely Australian Shiraz, a salad, and a roll, and it was DELICIOUS!

After dinner, we prepared for bed.  They even gave us PJ's!!  My seat didn't want to recline, though, but John, the expert seat fixer, got me set up straightaway.  Off to dreamland I went!  I slept for three or four hours, woke up for a bit, then went right back to sleep.  I woke again at a little after 4 AM to the smell of bacon.  YUM.  I freshened up a bit, then was served the meal I had ordered the night before (better than room service!) - scrambled eggs, bacon (much better than our bacon!), sweet onion relish, fruit, a croissant, and English Breakfast tea.  Then I had a cup of hot cocoa for dessert!  I ate every morsel!

The next thing I knew, we were filling out our declarations forms and preparing for landing!  I didn't even read half of my book (The Shanghai Girls, by Lisa See, author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) and I had slept all night!  I got my bags (hooray!) and made it through customs with no problems (and they didn't even ask to see my $39 visa that I got at the LAST MINUTE...) but then I couldn't find Shelley!  I knew she had gotten my frantically sent messages that I was now on a flight that arrived at the ungodly hour of 6 AM instead of 7:30 AM, but where was she?  I was sure I would recognize my facebook friend!

After about 30 minutes of looking, I went to the help desk, and the nice lady there let me use her phone to call Shelley.  And there she was - only a few meters away from where I had been!  Once found, we were on our way for a fantastic day in Sydney!

More to come, but for now we are off to Darling Harbour!

Leaving on a Jet Plane

OK, truth be told, this is really just a test to make sure I can post to this blog from my email!  That said, the countdown is really on now - my alarm is set for two hours from now, at which time I'll hop a ride to the airport and be on my way to Sydney!

It's been a relaxing time in LA - a couple of good meals, one sushi and one seafood at the beach - a little catch up time on the computer, a few loose ends tied up, and in general, just time to kick back and get really excited about what lies ahead.

So the next time you hear from me, unless something really exciting happens between now and takeoff (we'll hope that there is NOTHING eventful to report!) I'll be in Sydney!

So excited I'm not even hungry!

The Countdown is ON!!!

It's hard to believe that this dream trip is about to begin! And as always, there's a story to be told... Australia has been on my "must see" list for as long as I can remember, but this year the dream started to become real. Back in December, Creative Memories made it okay for us to do business via social networking sites, so my facebook account was about to power up! As consultants from all over the US, Canada, and Australia began posting pages on our CM Go Digital facebook group, I became curious about several women whose pages and postings I liked. So I did what any normal nosy person would do - I wrote them a message to learn more about them!

Very quickly, I became facebook friends with Shelley, Jenny, Jan, Janice, Kerrianne, and Amy, and then I introduced my NC friend Anne to them, too. I learned that the girls from Oz lived all over the country, and that while some of them knew or knew of the others, none of them knew all of them! But now we feel like we all know each other! I began kidding that I should come to Australia and do some digital scrapbook training, and then it became much more than a joke!

Fast forward: in a few days, I'm leaving for Australia, bound for Sydney and Showcase Australia! I'll be meeting Shelley first, then having dinner with her and Jenny and the WA team, and then meeting everyone except Amy at Showcase. I even get to speak there!! At Showcase, I'll be staying with Shelley and her team and I'm so looking forward to meeting many more new Aussie friends!

After Showcase, Rex (my husband) arrives and we'll spend a few days in Sydney at Shelley's. On our list - a performance (the Umbilical Brothers) at the Opera House, a bridge climb (with Shelley safely on dry land), beaches, and who knows what else??? Then we're heading for Cairns (think Jacksonville to Toronto) and the Whitsunday Islands for a few days of rest (ha!), relaxation, resorts, and REEF!! We'll fly to Cairns and then take the train to the Whitsundays (like Toronto to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and then on down to Brisbane (UP to Raleigh), where we will meet Jan (aka Brissie Jan) and see the sights there.

From Brisbane, we fly to Perth (which is like flying from NC to San Diego) and then we'll rent a car (pray for us as we drive on the wrong side!) and drive 5.5 hours to Jenny in Geraldton! After a few days, we'll go back to Perth and visit with Anne, then fly to Melbourne (sort of like San Diego to New Orleans) where we will hang with Janice and Kerrianne a couple of days. Then it's back to Sydney and a trip to see Amy in the Blue Mountains and ride on the Zig-Zag train. Are you tired yet? We'll round out the trip back in Sydney, and on the way home we even get a day in Auckland. But the rest of New Zealand will have to wait until next time!

Stay tuned...the adventure is just beginning!
